Heaven and Eggs!
January 10, 2006
Being the mall rat that I am, I can’t miss the newly opened Heaven and Eggs resto by the right wing of the Glorietta 4 entrance(facing the mall). The country feel and well-lit interior, not to mention that busy atmosphere, draws diners to this place.
After chatting with a good friend about their first store in Eastwood, my curiousity went up a notch and eversince then, I’ve been dying to try this resto out but never came around to doing it, what with all the holiday calories I’ve been packing in since December started.
Today, I finally found the best excuse to celebrate and I co-erced my mom to dine out since she’s leaving for the states tomorrow.
Upon entering the premises, my first impression was – this place needs to iron out some kinks, especially their service. No one was at the reception to seat us, although they do have the normal waiting area for dining patrons. We took the liberty to seat ourselves by the waiting area until their receptionist cum waitress cum server came by to give us a menu to browse while she goes to find us our table. Five minutes later, we were seated in a middle table and another waiter came by quickly to take our orders.
My mom got the Manila Spare Ribs and I got the Angus Beef and Eggs. For Hunee, I got him the Tuna Steak with Eggs and Mashed Potato since he’s been on this less-meat more seafood diet for a while now. I had the refillable Classic Iced Tea for my drink.Â
Food was served pretty quickly, compared to other restaurants in the same category. Â I have to say mom made a really really good choice. Mmmmmm the Java Rice that came with it was really good too! My Angus beef wasn’t so bad either… but nothing really spectacular too. I love eggs and I prefer it scrambled… I’d say that was probably one of the best scrambled eggs I’ve ever had although there was too much on my plate enough to kill me if I ate that same thing over and over for a whole week!
While leisurely muching away my angus beef, my iced tea was served and as I’ve been warned, it is indeed the classic Lipton tea bag dipped in cold water! I should have warned myself about the “classic” part! hehe… luckily they served syrup to sweeten it so I drowned my cold tea in syrup to give it that much needed sugar boost. I would say I was a little frustrated on this part of dinner since I have envisioned my ice tea to be as good as that of Country Waffles’.
I ordered Tuna Steak and eggs for my hunee who came a little bit late since he had to drive all the way from Ortigas. The tuna wasn’t too big but the mashed potato that came with it was interestingly large! The taste? I’d probably say, so-so…
For dessert, we (or I…since I devoured roughly 80% of it) had mango pancake crepe ala mode. I have to say this was a really good choice . Coming from someone who doesn’t eat mango desserts unless it’s fresh mango with nothing else, that is a compliment. The mango was sweet with a tinge of sourness that makes up for the already sweet medley of cream, condensed milk and chocolate syrup plus ice cream on top of it.
What I can’t help but notice though is the service. The waiters and servers were pretty polite and all that but it lacks that kick to make it good customer service. For one, I had to ask for fork each time food was served on our table. My food came in ahead of my fork and knife and my drink came around just when I was about to finish my meal (and that was supposed to be bottomless iced tea!)Â When my dessert came, it took me 3 minutes to get someone to bring a spoon and by that time, my ice cream was already melting. When my hunee arrived, again we had to call someone’s attention to bring him his fork, otherwise, I would have guessed they’re starting a trend to eat with a knife and a spoon… now that makes me wonder if indeed this is something I am not quite aware of.
Here’s how I rate my overall dining experience:
- TASTE – Good
- PRESENTATION -Â An eyecandy, good enough!Â
- SERVICE – Needs a lot of improvement
- CLEANLINESS – Needs more scrubbing (especially the wash room – it’s a communal washroom for ladies/gents)
- PRICE – Just right for the serving
Overall, I would say the place is good and the food is good enough but it lacks that sophistication and service excellence that came with my other favorite restos like Itallianis, Friday’s, Bizu and Country Waffles. Will I go back? Definitely, but maybe not until my next Country Waffles craving sets in.
